Artist Statement:
In responding to the provided theme, “On The Edge”, I chose a less literal approach. My work, Stages, explores the process of slowly losing control over one’s mind, and ultimately having to make a decision. The artwork is a series of 3 pieces on canvas titled Joy, Distort and Pieces. In taking the idea of an “edge” as a crux to the work, the pieces represent 3 stages: heading towards the edge, being on the edge and falling off the edge.
One of the striking elements of the work is an interactive element. I attached a painted hand on the third piece, “Pieces”, as I wanted to suggest that ultimately, the version of reality you choose is your decision. The piece was created with a range of various media to emphasize the idea of how different elements can come together when there’s a chaotic mess of emotions. It is my favourite thing about this work, as not only do I feel like I managed to capture this feeling well through my work, but also especially because this theme is close to my heart.
